Chapel Hill Honors Veterans with Heartfelt Community Events

Annual ceremonies and activities bring residents together in remembrance and gratitude

On November 11, 2025, the town of Chapel Hill will come together to honor its veterans through a series of heartfelt events that underscore the community's deep respect and appreciation for those who have served.

The day's commemorations will commence at 11:00 a.m. with the Orange County Veterans Day Celebration at the Orange County Veterans Memorial, located at 2501 Homestead Drive. This solemn ceremony will feature a presentation of colors by the U.S. Army Color Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Chapel Hill Mayor Jess Anderson, and the National Anthem performed by Billy G. Farrish, Minister of Music at Prospect Hill Baptist Church. The keynote address will be delivered by Brigadier General Vivek Kshetrapal, Deputy Commanding General of the 81st Readiness Division of the U.S. Army Reserve. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Southern Human Services Center.

In the afternoon, the Durham Community Concert Band will present "Pops and Patriotic Tunes" at 2:30 p.m. on the Green at Southern Village. Residents are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy this musical tribute to veterans.

Throughout the day, local schools will engage students in writing letters to service members, fostering a personal connection to the sacrifices made for freedom. Additionally, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9100 will host evening gatherings where storytelling and camaraderie take precedence over formal speeches, allowing veterans and community members to share experiences and laughter.

These events reflect Chapel Hill's enduring commitment to honoring its veterans, not just through ceremonies, but by fostering a community spirit that recognizes service as a shared responsibility. On this day, the town pauses to express gratitude, ensuring that the lessons of courage and sacrifice remain a vibrant part of its collective memory.
