Local Artisans and Diverse Businesses Revitalize Downtown |
Chapel Hill's Franklin Street is experiencing a vibrant transformation, as local artisans and diverse businesses infuse new energy into the downtown area.
In October 2024, the annual Festifall Arts Markets celebrated their 50th year, showcasing over 30 local artists and artisans each week. The event featured interactive arts experiences and performances, highlighting the rich tapestry of Chapel Hill's creative community.
Adding to this cultural renaissance, acclaimed chef Brandon Sharp and his wife, Elizabeth, opened PrĂłximo, a Spanish-style tapas restaurant, in September 2024. Located at 173 E. Franklin Street, PrĂłximo occupies the historic space of Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe, which closed during the pandemic. The Sharps aim to rejuvenate Franklin Street, making it a destination for both locals and visitors.
Further supporting small businesses, the Chapel Hill Economic Development Department launched a grant program in June 2023 to assist downtown establishments facing relocation due to redevelopment. This initiative underscores the town's commitment to preserving its unique local identity amidst growth and change.
These developments reflect Chapel Hill's dedication to inclusive commerce, blending tradition with innovation to create a dynamic and welcoming downtown environment. |
